Hi Moms, all of you must have heard about diaper rash. That red itchy spots which appears on your babies’ skin that were covered in diapers.

Let’s find out more about diaper rash.

What is exactly diaper rash and what may cause it?

Diaper Rash and Its Causes

Diaper rash, also known as Irritant Diaper Dermatitis (IDD), is a dermatology condition and skin problem that usually appears on early childhood. If your babies have a diaper rash, stay calm.  Instead, we have to find a way to cure it and make our babies feel comfortable, Moms.

Most children will experience diaper rash at least once on their first three years. It is mostly experience by children on their 6 to 12 months.

The main cause of diaper rash is a prolonged contact with  dampness/excessive moisture on your babies’ skin. Other factors are :

The area that covered by diapers is increasing skin warmth and moisture

Diapers usually have a fitting size and comfortable to use. Therefore, area covered by diaper is not exposed to air. The result is, your babies’ skin is getting warmer and more humid, having a lot more pH than any other parts of their body. Excess humidity on skin makes it easier to become irritated and swollen.

Chafed skin caused by friction between diapers and skin folds

Friction can weaken skin protection layer. Moist skin is far more susceptible than dry skin for friction, and that is why the area covered by diapers has this problem. Friction between diapers and skin, skin folds, and action of rubbing and cleaning that area can make it easier for bacteria that cause irritation to enter the skin.

Prolonged contact between skin with urine, feces, or both of it

Enzymes on feces (protease and lipase) could irritate your beloved babies’ skin. Feces also contain microorganisms that cause skin infection. Urine irritate the area that covered by diapers more because it releasing ammonia that cause increase on skin pH and enzyme from feces became more active. This could cause skin tissues damage and eventually became diaper rash.
